Sorry all, but I am discontinuing this extension. 11/2/07
If you’re looking for more updates, you can grab Razvan’s version. It isn’t exactly like mine (I tried to add some nice usability features) but hopefully his will still work out for you all. As much as I’d love to keep developing this one, I am just too busy between school, consulting, and working on a new user generated content site (as well as trying to organize a team for a startup).
***********
For a while now I have gone back and forth between Del.icio.us and Ma.gnolia when it comes to social bookmarking sites (I had also used BlueDot for a short period of time and did not like it). I always liked Magnolia more, but one thing that kept me coming back to del.icio.us was their firefox plugin to both bookmark sites and go directly to your bookmarks.

(What the bookmark window looks like)

Click this to bookmark the active website.

Click this to goto your ma.gnolia page.
Download Magnolia Firefox Extension (version 0.8.0).
Also, if anyone can put together some better icons for this, send them my way and I’ll update the extension with it. I am also considering adding a within firefox search. Note: This extension is based upon the original work of Razvan’s 0.6 extension.

@Razvan:
It’s your own choice. This extension has never been about me and has always been about benefiting the magnolia community. I personally tried to contact you several times before I took the reigns to update the extension after a time of no-updates. Since them, it took you around 4 months to even get ahold of me. And now, even when you have, I am still unable to contact you in private. I have never hid the fact that you were the original developer. I had mentioned it when I first wrote this page, however, I’ve made a number of updates since then and it grew so large that I might have cut it out by accident when I removed other information. I’ve updated the extension to have “Razvan” in ‘Created by’ in the about page and not “Jardon” as well.

Whohoo! Larry and I were just talking about this the other day. Awesome.

Hey Chris,
Thanks for stopping by :)
Hope you get some good use out of it!
I’m no extension guru, so let me know if you find any bugs and I’ll see what I can do to proverbially squash them.
michaelb // May 7, 2007 at 10:03 am |
I’ve not had my Mac to try it yet, but in the Windows version of Firefox I’m not seeing the second icon for “my Ma.gnolia”. Not sure if it is a bug or I just need to turn on a setting. Either way thanks for the extension!
Nathan // May 7, 2007 at 11:10 am |
Hey Michael,
That’s odd. By you’re not seeing you mean it didn’t automatically add it to your toolbar or it’s not there at all?
Try right mouse clicking on your toolbar next to the Magnolia bookmark button, goto Tools->Customize-> find the My Magnolia button and drag it onto your toolbar.
I thought I had auto-add to toolbar working but it appears not. I will see about updating the extension with this when I get it working. Thanks for the heads up :)
michaelb // May 7, 2007 at 11:52 am |
Nathan,
Yeah it didn’t add the My Magnolia button to the toolbar and I must have overlooked it in customize.
Thanks!

Good stuff! Thanks for putting it together. I will let you know if I see anything out of the ordinary with the plugin
Nathan // May 7, 2007 at 1:01 pm |
Not a problem :)
You were right on the other one not being added. Working on making it so it’s auto-added to the toolbar now.

Hi Nathan –
I’ve been waiting for something like this!
Would icons like this work?
http://superstarch.com/mag/home.png
http://superstarch.com/mag/bookmark.png
If so, I’ll shrink’em down!

Very cool Marcus! :)
I quite like it! The only thing I would wonder is whether there is enough differentiation between the Bookmark and Home. Don’t know if you have any ideas on that. There is also a hover effect, though it’s not necessary.
maique // May 7, 2007 at 3:30 pm |
very, very cool.
thanks for coding this. nice work.

Awesome work. Thanks for making Ma.gnolia even more useful!

Thanks for the Add-on! I’m sensing an all-out brawl between this add-on and the Ma.gnolia Dashboard widget for Total Social Bookmarking Supremacy!
John // May 8, 2007 at 2:06 am |
Great work! Thanks very much.
One little annoyance that I had was that the Description textarea always had four tabs in it to start with. I was able to fix that by removing the hard return and four tabs in between the open and close tags for the Description box in both the magnolia.html file and (more importantly, it turned out) in the magnolia.html file within the magnolia.jar archive. I wanted to pass that along in case anyone else found that to be an annoyance or maybe as a bugfix for the next release.
Nathan // May 8, 2007 at 10:38 am |
@Rob- I always liked a good battle! Although I don’t know, the dashboard widget looks awefully nice ;-). Maybe I’ll just segment the market and go for windows users :-p
@John- Great insight! That had always annoyed me as well. I hadn’t thought of removing that. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll see about updating that today or tomorrow as well as adding some new images.

This is really cool Nathan! Thanks for sharing this and let us know what we can do to help this project grow.

Hi,
Thanks for this tool! Unfortunately, I’m not having much luck getting the plugin to work. Here’s a video of the error I’m seeing:

Thanks for any help!
Chris
Nathan // May 20, 2007 at 9:00 pm |
Hey Christopher!
Thanks for the heads up. Looking into it now. It had been working fine, but since they’re continuing to do updates on ma.gnolia, something else may have broken.
Looking into it now.

Thanks, Nathan!
il maistro // June 8, 2007 at 7:20 pm |
I keep getting this error when I try to add a site:
Error: Page not found (forbidden)
Do you know how to solve it?
Nathan // June 9, 2007 at 6:17 pm |
Hey Il maistro!
That’s odd that you’re getting that error. It seems to be working fine for me and a few others that i’ve had try it. When exactly is the error occuring? Also, when it occurs, can you tell me whether it says “You’re signed in as “? What may have happened is that you’ve been logged out of magnolia or it didnt yet confirm whether you’re logged in or not… something im working to fix.
Let me know if it still gives you trouble!
il maistro // June 11, 2007 at 6:26 pm |
Well, I’m definitevely signed in. First, there appears the form where I should enter the information for the page I want to add, and when I press “save”, the message appears, as a popup windows message. It says “Error: Page not found (forbidden)” and I have to click “OK” more than 3 times to make it dissapear.
SubZane // June 12, 2007 at 9:13 am |
Nice plugin but I desperatly need to be able to add bookmark to a specific group, is that possible to do in next release maybe?
Nathan // June 12, 2007 at 12:00 pm |
Hey SubZane :)
Glad you enjoy the plugin and thanks for the request! I will look into adding groups to the next release!
Thanks for stopping by!
SubZane // June 13, 2007 at 9:20 pm |
Superb! then all that’s left to do is a tag based menu like the del.icio.us extension have (to browse all bookmarks by tag) and I can convert fully to using magnolia :)
Veronica // June 17, 2007 at 12:21 am |
Just my 2 cents worth…
Personally I think the icons are fantastic as it is, only I would prefer if they were of the same size. As for where they lead to, why not allow the user to have a choice between the homepage (ma.gnolia.com) and the full bookmarks listing page (i.e. ma.gnolia.com/people/username/bookmarks) when they click on the main button, and a choice between full or simplified bookmarking for the other button?
Overall a fantastic ma.gnolia plugin that I’ll continue using. Thanks for the effort!
Nathan // June 17, 2007 at 11:33 am |
Hey Veronica!
Thanks for taking the time to comment here and give some suggestions :)
Some good thoughts both here and in the other post. I am currently working to squash a bug or two, but I will definitely look into doing that as well as seeing how I might be able to add a list of tags.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you continue to enjoy the extension! :)
Veronica // June 17, 2007 at 4:05 pm |
Not a problem at all. I’ll definitely be watching this space!
hillary // July 4, 2007 at 5:08 am |
i’m getting the same error as il maistro // Jun 8th 2007 at 7:20 pm
i’m logged in, and even logged in within the popup. let me know if anyone resolved this.
(firefox 2.0.0.4 fwiw)
Nathan // July 4, 2007 at 3:18 pm |
Hey Hillary!
Yeah. Sorry about that. I’m currently aware of it and am working with the developers of ma.gnolia to fix the problem :)
Hope it’s not too much of an inconvenience, it should be fixed soon!
Razvan // July 18, 2007 at 7:15 pm |
Hi. Nice Extension, too bad it’s a copy. You could atleast make some changes, but you didn’t, you’ve just made a “copy/rename/paste”. Shame on you!
The extension you’ve copied is here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2216
Nathan // July 18, 2007 at 8:39 pm |
Hey Razvan!
For those that are wondering, Razvan is the original creator of the code this extension is based off of, he’s the person I cited earlier on and tried to contact.
Also, it makes me sad to have you say it’s just a copy :( If you take the time to look at it, I’ve actually optimized a number of things, changed much of the formatting, added search, a button that will take users directly to their bookmarks, as well as other planned changed, and as far as I know, your older extension shouldn’t be able to bookmark due to recent changes in ma.gnolia’s site.
Now, assuming that you really are Razvan (since the email you provided doesn’t work) I would love to get in touch and see what can’t be done to improve this extension more! :)
Razvan // July 19, 2007 at 7:07 am |
Don’t get me wrong, I like the open source concepts. I’m not a copyright freak, but I’ve read your article and comments and I didn’t found a word about the fact that you made an upgrade to an existing extension – mine :).
About the fact that you “optimized a number of things”, yes it is correct, but that makes it about 10% of the code and functionality.
If you like, we can collaborate on anything you like, but not for this extension (we started with the wrong foot).
Another thing, you wrote “as far as I know, your older extension shouldn’t be able to bookmark due to recent changes in ma.gnolia’s site”; it’s correct, but that’s about my 0.6 version and my current version is 0.7 and uses ma.gnolia.com’s API (it works fine).

Sweet! Thanks for picking this up Nathan. I’m downloading the plugin right now and can’t wait to give it a shot.
DarkeSword // August 3, 2007 at 10:25 pm |
Hi Nathan. I really like the enhancements you made to the extension. I’d like to see a feature where I can choose to post a bookmark directly to a group, as opposed to my own bookmarks. Is that at all possible?
Nathan // August 8, 2007 at 3:22 pm |
That is something that has been mentioned before and will be looked into :)
DarkeSword // August 9, 2007 at 3:00 pm |
Thank you. :)
hillary // September 7, 2007 at 9:53 pm |
just wondering if you have any further plans for the extension. i’d love to see:
- support for groups
- integration w/ magnolia db so the tag input works more like the bookmarklets… i.e. tag completion based on tags i’ve used before.
thanks! (and the problem i was having before seems to be gone.)
Tony // November 6, 2007 at 10:57 pm |
Hello,
When I try to save a site to Ma.gnolia I get the error
“invalid API key”.
I am not able to find a resolution thru google. Would you be able to help me?
Thank you,
Tony
Nathan // November 6, 2007 at 11:14 pm |
Hey Tony,
I’ve since discontinued this extension (just too busy with new projects & work). I had been working with Magnolia to make parts of the extension work, and spoke with them a few days ago discussing that I’ve officially stopped developing this. As such, they have most likely switched over some of the internal stuff we had arranged. If you check out Razvan’s version (link at the top of this post) that should work for you. If you want some of the features I have in his, let him know he’s more than welcome to use the code.
Sorry & hope this helps :)
